Teens Thinking About Quitting Tobacco: Care Instructions

There are many good reasons to quit using tobacco products. Think about your main reasons, and focus on them. Maybe you want to be a healthy adult. It could be that you need to save money. Or maybe you don't want to smell like smoke.

Your doctor will be a big help guiding you along the way. And there are many other resources that can help too.

Quitting tobacco products can improve your ability to do physical activity. You may have more energy.

If you quit smoking, your sense of taste and smell may improve. This can make food more enjoyable. And your skin and teeth may be healthier.

How can you prepare to quit using tobacco products?

  • Manage nicotine cravings. You can take medicine to help with the cravings. Or you can distract yourself by doing things like chewing gum, dancing, or listening to music.

  • See a counsellor, or join a program. These things may help you quit.

  • Stay active, and eat healthy foods. If you're worried about gaining weight after quitting, eating healthy foods and exercising may help you stay at a weight that's healthy for you.

  • Get support. Call the AlbertaQuits helpline at 1-866-710-7848. Or try a program like the AlbertaQuits text messaging service to get text messages with advice and support. There are also many free apps, such as Quash that can help you track your progress and celebrate your successes.

  • Find supportive friends. It may help to spend time with friends who don't use tobacco products. You could also find a friend to quit with you.

  • Learn how to say no. When someone offers tobacco products, look them in the eye and say, "No, thanks." Say it as many times as you need to.

Follow-up care is a key part of your treatment and safety. Be sure to make and go to all appointments, and call your doctor or nurse advice line (811 in most provinces and territories) if you are having problems. It's also a good idea to know your test results and keep a list of the medicines you take.
