Should My Son Be Circumcised?

Should My Son Be Circumcised? (00:01:38)
Video Transcript

Some people choose to circumcise.

Others don't.

Some people believe one type of penis is more attractive or sensitive and others believe the exact opposite.

Both types of penis need to be kept clean.

An uncircumcised penis requires a little more attention to cleaning.

But you and your son can easily learn how.

So what are the medical facts?

Studies show that circumcision can slightly reduce the chance of cancer of the penis and urinary and sexually transmitted infections.

But these small health benefits aren't strong enough for many doctors to recommend circumcision.

And that's because circumcision also carries some risks.

It's surgery.

And it's painful, although local anesthesia helps.

And there's a small risk of problems from the surgery, like bleeding, infection, and the urethra getting blocked.

So there you have it--the slight benefits and the slight risks.

Some parents also worry about their son's penis looking different.

But, in recent years, more parents are choosing not to circumcise.

So if you don't do it, your son is not going to be the only boy with a natural penis.

And your son can always choose circumcision later.

The decision comes down to personal preference and what you and your family are most comfortable with.

No matter what choice you make, you'll be a great parent.
