Licensed practical nurse (LPN)
Licensed practical nurses (LPNs) work within their own scope of practice, standards of practice, and code of ethics.
LPNs work mainly as front-line nurses to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate nursing care. LPNs work in many areas of Alberta's healthcare system including acute care, seniors' health, long-term care, community, primary care clinics, education, occupational health and safety, public health, and leadership.
LPNs in Alberta graduate with a diploma from an approved 2 year college program. They must pass the Canadian Practical Nurse Registration Exam (CPNRE) to practice as an LPN. LPNs must hold a license from the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta to practice in Alberta.
