Section 5: Steps for doing Intermittent Self-Catheterization (ISC)

In this section, you’ll get:

  • What you need to get ready.
  • Step-by-step instructions for how to do ISC.
  • Helpful tips.

Before You Start

Choose a room or space at home to start practicing self-catheterizing. You’ll need:

  • Privacy.
  • Good lighting.
  • A surface to put your supplies on.
  • A chair or bed.
  • Room for a mirror to see yourself (at least when you first start).

As you get comfortable with the procedure, you may not need a mirror, but will catheterize simply by feeling for the urethral opening. After a while, you’ll be able to catheterize yourself in any bathroom, even away from home.
