Intermittent Self-Catheterization for Women

Section 4: Supplies You Need for ISC

In this section, you’ll:

  • Find out what supplies you need for ISC.
  • Learn about different types of catheters.

What Supplies do I need?

Make sure you have all the supplies with you before you start to put in your catheter. Some things you’ll already have at home. Your healthcare provider will help you get the other supplies. You’ll need:

  • Soap and water.
  • Clean washcloths and towels.
  • Mirror (at least at first, to help you see your bottom).
  • Flashlight or bright light (if needed).
  • Container to collect urine.
    • If you need to measure your urine, you will need a large measuring cup, otherwise a measuring ‘hat’ (see photo), ice cream, or margarine container can be used. You’ll be able to empty directly into the toilet after you’re comfortable with ISC and don’t need to measure any more.
  • Female self-catheters.
  • Lubricant for insertion.
  • Container to store catheters (Ziploc bags or toothbrush holder).
  • Manufacturers recommend that single use catheters are used only once.
  • If you plan to reuse catheters, please talk to your healthcare provider.
